Circa 1785 - Though Americans had just declared their independence, afternoon tea lingered from the English tradition as did the comfortably elegant shoe. These brocade pumps were not as pointy as some of their French counterparts, and the high throat of the shoes hid the foot, thus keeping them from being risque. Even in France, the "Anglicized" custom of wearing practical shoes overthrew the existing fashion. But the jewels and rich fabric were hardly the look of the commoner. © Raine 1999
